Fancy the Hong Kong's Ladies' Market equivalent in Singapore? Arguably the closest you can get will be the Bugis Street Market (or Bugis Village or New Bugis Street) located right across the ultra modern shopping mall known as the Bugis Junction. You will not be able the find the Bugis Street from the Singapore map anymore. Bugis Street, in the 1950s was renowned internationally for its notorious night activities where flamboyantly dressed transvestites would parade themselves attracting Caucasians mainly sailors and military personnel on their Rest & Relax outings. Unlike in the past where entire street comes alive in the evening as push carts gather offering a wide selection of cheap goods and hawker food, the modern days Bugis Street is bustling even in the day time selling wares from cheap watches, T-shirts, China-imported CD/DVDs and snacks.
Across the Bugis Street Market after the Queen Street, you will find the Bugis Flea Market that opens daily except Chinese New Year.
The area is a short stroll to the famous Goddess of Mercy Chinese Temple (观音庙, Guan Yin Tong Temple, or Kwan Im Temple), Sim Lim Square, Sungei Road Flea Market, Little India and Kampong Glam.
