One Touch And You're In Trouble: Expats Prime Targets In Molest Scams

Source: The Straits Times 03 September 2011

His hands on her waist, they swayed to the music at a crowded, dimly lit nightclub.

Maybe this Westerner was bumped. Or perhaps he was drunk or feeling cheeky when his hand slipped across her breast. Or did it? There is rising concern from some quarters that women are making false claims of molestation in order to extort money from foreign men.

At least two foreign missions here, the British High Commission and French Embassy, have issued grim warnings on their websites. The British website reads: 'Travellers are advised to avoid any action that could be interpreted as molestation. Scams involving false claims of molestation are thought to exist.'

Who's telling the truth?

'When there are 200 to 300 people in a small space, things happen. Ultimately, someone is lying and someone is telling the truth. We can't judge. We can only ask if they want to make a report.'

The French website states: 'Behaviour towards women, especially in public, should never be ambiguous. There has been an increase in cases where the victim proposes to not file a complaint of molestation in exchange for immediate financial compensation.'

Even popular Australia-based travel websites such as World Nomads have warned of such scams.

The raid took place Wednesday (June 22) night around 9pm.

Plainclothes policemen who went to the bar saw hostesses serving customers in the nude.

A shop owner who worked nearby told The New Paper that the lounge was frequented by young Singaporean executives, and occasionally Caucasians.

Saturday Special Report: Sex, lies and trafficking

EVERY year, many young women and teenagers from the region are lured to Singapore with the promise of respectable jobs, only to be forced into the sex trade here.

Others come willingly to sell their bodies, but have no idea that they will be locked up or forced to hand over all earnings to pimps.

Prostitutes from the Philippines, China, Sri Lanka and Vietnam can be found in parts of Singapore such as Orchard Towers, and along Geyland Road, Rowell road and Desker Road.

Technician jailed for engaging services of underaged prostitute

Source: Todayonline Apr 15, 2011
A quality control technician was yesterday jailed a year for engaging the services of a 14-year-old prostitute.

Bhadrulzaman Hashim (picture), 29, met the girl in October 2008 through a mutual friend. The girl had lied about her age, claiming that she was 17 years old.

He later discovered that the girl was a prostitute after he chanced upon her while she was soliciting outside Summer Hotel at Lorong 22, Geylang, in April 2009.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Chua Ying-Hong said Bhadrulzaman had sex with the teenager in the hotel without checking her age and paid her S$50 for her services.

For the same amount, the two had sex again in the hotel in September that year, said DPP Chua.

Defence Counsel Hamidul Haq told the court in his mitigation plea that the girl was "in the business" and she had offered her services to his client.

District Judge Eddy Tham, however, said the fact the teenager had done so was not a mitigating factor and the law is in place to protect the young from being sexually exploited.

Bhadrulzaman had pleaded guilty earlier this month to two of three counts of engaging the services of a sex worker who was below 18 years old.

He could have been jailed up to seven years, fined, or both for each charge.
